Every word processor has tips and tricks up its sleeve. Here are a few in Word Perfect that my clients and students have found useful.

• Turn off that annoying default that turns your second tab into an indent!

Tools - QuickCorrect - Format-As-You-Go - uncheck the QuickIndent box

• Turn off that annoying default of capitalizing the first letter you type

Tools - QuickCorrect - Format-As-You-Go - uncheck the first box on the screen

• If you find the red markings under misspelled words annoying: Tools - Proofread - Off.

• When you use the Search feature in Word Perfect – do you know how to find codes?

Edit - Find and Replace - Match - Codes – pick the code from the list (it's alphabetical).

• Got one or two lines hanging over onto one more piece of paper in a document? Can't find any more lines to delete and you don't want to change the margins or the font size? Change the line height a smidge:

Format - Line - Line Height. Change from Auto to Fixed and reduce the number a few tenths.

• Want to include bar codes on your above or below the address on the envelopes you print?

On the Envelope screen, select Options. The top half deals with the position of the return address and addressee's address on the envelope. The bottom half allows you generate a bar code above or below the addressee's address.

• Is there a file in a folder that you use a lot and you're tired of scrolling down the list of files? Rename it with a "1" or an asterisk in front ("Fax cover sheet" becomes "1Fax cover Sheet"). That way the file pops to the top of the file list. You can push files to the bottom of the list by renaming them with "zz" in front ("Exhibit A for Escrow Agreement" would be renames ("zzExhibit A for Escrow Agreement")
